I think the audience needs to have a open ending as it is because the book is far from happy ending. The invitation can be a signal or a proof that Emma has never stopped loving Adéle. The only one that is concerned about Adéle is Samir, yet no one have time to penetrate that shallow façade when Adéle tries to claim she is okay. As you wrote Danielle, I think neither Lise nor Adéle like each other as they are competitive against each other for the love of Emma. Furthermore I think that the reason for Emma to still display the pictures of Adéle is not for triumph but a signal of that Adéle means alot to her, just as we can see the pregnant Lise on one painting.
I think social class is an important key in some aspects when looking upon it. It is rather obvious that Adéle is Emma’s passionate love but things got in between. Adéle tried to win back Emma at the café but could not because Emma had something more important in life, and that was the child of Lise.
